“The parish of St. Thomas is suffering from serious inadequacy to effectively deal with its health needs.” Medical Officer of Health for the parish disclosed this information at a recent Board of Health meeting, held in Morant Bay.
Dr. Ram told the Parish Council in his report at the meeting, that the non-improvement in human resources is affecting the delivery of health care in the parish, pointing to the promises that were made for additional doctors, which have not been materialised.
Dr. Ram stressed that the parish is in desperate need of a dentist. He also mentioned that some sections of the parish’s domestic water supply, is still cause for concern and that those areas continue to be monitored.
The Council’s Chairman, Mayor Harold Brown asked about the benefits of the extra resources to the parish.
Dr. Ram said it was difficult to retain the personnel sent, because they left for various reasons including the physical infrastructure of the parish, as well as the inadequacy of the facilities they have to live and work.
The councillors suggested that the Mayor seek approval from the Council to write to the Ministry of Health on the matter, following a meeting with the Minister.
The Public Health Department warned that crack down on non-conforming food establishments will continue in the New Year.
In addressing the issue, Chief Public Health Inspector, Mr. Charles Lewis told the meeting that no effort will be spared in getting 100 percent compliance, as the zero tolerance programme is intensified.
