Today was a historical day in the life of the Westmoreland Parish Council, as its first batch of Municipal Police was sworn in at a brief ceremony held at the St. Georges Anglican Church Hall, Savanna La Mar on Thursday, February 21.
The batch included three men and five women namely- Zolia Patrick, Antonio Robinson (supervisor) Avery Hylton, Craig Wisdom, Wollette Kristos, Rydell Heaven, Gayann Kelly and Nolda Essue. They were sworn in by the Honourable Owen Sinclair, Custos of Westmoreland, assisted by Superintendent Cyril Brissett of the Westmoreland Police Division Headquarters.
"You are all pioneers and much is expected of you all," said Custos Sinclair in his address, congratulating all the officers who were sworn in. At the same time he cautioned them not to let the authority vested in them get to their heads. He went on to say that they are to do their duties without fear and favour and if they do this they will have no problem. He also urged them to follow the rules and maintain law and order.
Mayor of Savanna La Mar, Bertel Moore in giving the Gleaner his perspective of the Municipal Police, said, "In terms of the Municipal Police we will be able to regulate traffic much better because as you know we have some serious problems in terms of taxi drivers who just park or stop anywhere and everywhere along Great Georges Street.
The Municipal Police he said are empowered to issue tickets and prosecute, so I think we can clear up Great Georges Street in some way with them out there on the street.
They will also be dealing with street vendors, those who just go out there and block the sidewalk in order to sell their wares, we will not be tolerating this anymore.
As it relates to the commencement of their work, he said their tour of duty will start on the third of March, he said all eight of them will work together for sometime after which they will be dispatched in groups of twos to work in Negril and Grange Hill.
Member of Parliament for Western Westmoreland, Dr Wykeham McNeil said, "One of the problems we face as a people is the lack of discipline and order and if we are able to correct these our potential will be limitless."
The Municipal police he said has a vital role to play in regaining law and order at root level. He said, "The Municipal will have to work with the local police in order to bring back discipline and order at the root level and continue to the top and I believe everyone will look forward to this."
Antonio Robinson a member of the Municipal Police group and Supervisor speaking on behalf of his colleagues said, "I am feeling elated, knowing that we were sworn in today. We are looking forward to start working on the third of March, we know that this is not an easy task, but we are committed to put what we have learnt into practice so that those we serve can be proud of us."
