The Mines Basic School in St Ann was recently given a face lift on National Youth Service Day by the International Volunteers.
The building was painted by the Mines Citizen Association, and shelves for school and kitchen use were also made. A new covering for the new bathroom pit was provided by the St Ann Parish Council. There were youths from all over the island. Mr Omar Blagrove came with approximately 20 youth from Northern Caribbean University Club in Manchester. Mr. Paul Barrett, Corporate Service Officer, National Youth Service , came with a group from St Ann's Bay and Trelawny. The Moneague Youth Club was also present.
It was a colourful work with young people doing what they could in blue, yellow, green and white T-Shirts with words such as 'International Volunteers Day', 'National Youth Service Day', and 'Jamaica Youth Shaping the World'.
Mrs. Roberta Ellis, Director -Youth Policy and Programme Development from Kingston, said that she was delighted to see the cooperation and the large turn out of the youth and citizens of the Mines community. A picture of the Mines Basic School building which was erected by citizens. The St. Ann Jaycees (1962-1968) was shown to Mrs Ellis, Mrs Valerie Cole, Principal of the school, who expressed her gratitude to the youth volunteers and citizens who co-operated to make the school better equipped. Greeting was also given by Ms. H. Headlam from the Ministry of Education. Also present were Rev. W. Allen J.P. of Mines District, St Ann and Mr. O. Lawrence (MP) for North West St Ann.
