The Swift Purcell Boys Home which is located in Belfield St. Mary, administrative department along with their tailor and wood work shop was destroyed by fire early Friday morning.
A fire truck from the Annotto Bay Fire Brigade swiftly came on the scene and contained the flames preventing it from further destroying the lodging of staff and children at the home. This though was good, barely erased the considerable loss the Quaker Church run institution had to face.
According to the police’s preliminary reports, it is deduced that the cause of the fire is robbery and arson. They also found items from the store room laying in the drive way to the institution.
One worker who left the premises at 2: 30 am said that when he left, there was no sign of fire, so he approximates the fire to have been started at approximately 3:00am.
Members of the community on hearing of the tragedy turned up to witness what had taken place and to offer sympathies.“This is an institution for homeless boys, it is beyond me why someone would try to harm the helpless” said one resident shaking her head in dismay.
Though the total losses have not yet been tallied. He appears to have been huge as a lot of money was invested in the equipments used in the woodwork shop and the tailor department, which aided the boys who lived there to garner skills to help them in their future lives.
